“The White Fin is everywhere. In Los Angeles, in Paris, in your mind. It is the shriek of freedom that the world has been trying to silence in us since we were children. The White Fin is a flag that can be planted on any of the mundane quotidian objects around us, to protest that they pass through our line of sight without us questioning their method of use, thus dampening our creativity and dimming our enlightenment. When Lucas attaches the fin to an object, he is declaring the independence of his thoughts, marking that territory as one that his imagination has conquered, that his psyche has successfully surfed without being pulled under the waves of psychological oppression that crash into us all day long from all directions. And in that moment, he is also transforming the object itself, from a dull, inanimate furnishing into a vehicle for magic, an inspiration for all those who will see the image he creates. He is reclaiming some of the conceptual space that has been taken away from us by the homogeneity of design, of lifestyle, of education. It is a gesture of resistance against the tyranny of utilitarianism.
The White Fin invites us all to consider what objects around us might be surfed, to think about where we might place fins in our own communities, to notice where a radical assertion of disobedience is required, and to view these objects and spaces in new ways. When you show someone photographs of the fin, you are not just celebrating the emancipation of Lucas’s mind, or your own; you are encouraging the minds of those around you to surf freely over the hellscape of current events, to fight for their innocence and wonder, to stay wild, to believe in themselves, to give new lives to the restless young spirits that have been buried so long within them. And when you see others sharing images of the White Fin, it is a message from your fellow freedom fighters of the mind. A reminder that you are not alone in your humanity. It is the call for your soul’s ascension to true liberty.”
